The security of civil aviation services by air companies, coordination policy of functions, air navigations and the airport services are assured and taken by The Government Implementing Agency – the Civil Aviation Authority. In the result of policy measures taken for improving air navigation services to line up with the international standards, expansion of international cooperation and upgrading qualification of engineering-technical staff, and technical and technological renovations, the number of international air routes via Mongolia has reached 8 and the number of flights has increasingly reached 39,000 in 2004 compared to 8000 and 20745 in 1994 and 1997 respectively.

The international airport of Ulaanbaatar, which was built by the former Soviet Union’ assistance, has been rehabilitated to the international standards. The rehabilitation of the local airports in Khovd, Dornod and Sukhbaatar Aimags have been successfully completed and at persent the local airport in Bayan-Ulgii Aimag has being rehabilitated.

Both international and local flights were carried out by Russian made aircrafts as well as post deliveries to all aimags’ centres (provinces) and majority of soums (villages) and certain number of bags (smaller settlements). Nevertheless the air passenger and freight transportations are shared by private air companies, the main role has been still palyed the state-owned MIAT company. Nowadays, the MIAT company uses 2 no of aircrafts of A310- 300 and B737-800 models for international flights. The A310-300 model airplane is being leased and it shall be a Mongolian property in 3 years.

Out of 5 private air companies, the Aeromongolia Company has started operating in civil aviation services from June 2003 and at present it carries approximately 40 per cent of local passenger transportation. Compared to the previous year’s performances figures of local flights, the numbers of flights and passengers have increased by 15 per cent and 14 per cent respectively in 2004.

Further, a policy within the civil aviation sector shall be undertaken for increasing number of crafts, assuring quality of services and satisfying local demands by means of constructing new airports, improving existing local airports, paving runways and encouraging domestic and foreign investments.

Canada to open trade office in Ulaanbaatar

Canada will open a permanent trade office in Mongolia to assist local Canadian businesses. Canadian firms have a reported $395 million in investments, including operating more than 20 mines. Canada is also Mongolia’s second largest investor.
