Some tips for seeking Medical Care

The level of Mongolian medical services provided in Mongolia is NOT up to western standarts. Unlike many other foriegn capitals, there is no clinic that caters to foriegners or that provides a western standart of care. Access to any medical care is difficult at best.

The level of Mongolian medical services provided in Mongolia is NOT up to western standarts. Unlike many other foriegn capitals, there is no clinic that caters to foriegners or that provides a western standart of care. Access to any medical care is difficult at best. In the countryside, outside of the Ulaanbaatar, Medical care is VERY DIFFICULT.

All Mongolian hospitals are very short of most medical supplies includng basic care items, drugs, and spare parts for medical equipments. If you must seek care in Ulaanbaatar several things you should keep in mind when dealing with local care providers.

1. There are generally no English speaking physicians or staff at any of the local hospitals or clinics. Many local doctors were trained in the former Soviet Union, and therefore speak Russian. If you do not speak Mongolian or Russian, an interpreter should accompany you to the hospital.

2. Most Mongolian Hospitals have not established fixed fees for foriegn patients. To avoid being charged exobitant fees for even routine care, patients should inquire aout fees before services are rendered.

3. Third, one should always telephone the hospital or clinic before visiting to be sure that it is ope, that the proper staff is on duty, and that the hospital has the supplies and equipment to perform the desired service. Once again, no English-speaking staff will generally be available to answer your call.

There are several hospitals that you can visit.

First is Russian Polyclinic Hospital. It's less crowded, and best supplied hospital in Ulaanbaatar. It's located on the Peace avenue, just west of Jukov musee. It has fairly good facilities and will make a contract with foriegn businesses. You may need Russian language Interpreter. There is 24 hours ambulance service and a number to call to inform the hospital of your arrival. TELEPHONE 4500076

If you want to try different hospital you can also go to the Hospital number 2, which is located on the Peace Avenue, opposite side of the Wrestling Staduim. Some of the staffs have been trained in Japan, Germany, and the UK, so it's possible to speak English over there. It is generally considered to have the best care available in a Mongolian facility, but due to supply shortages it may not be able to perform all procedurs.

Private rooms with fridge and TV can be set up for foreigners. Interpreter services are provided if and English speaking doctor is not available. TELEPHONE 450230 or 450554
