Geographical location 

 Umnugobi province is the one that has the biggest area-165.400km2 and is located in the southern part of the country. There are high mountains such as the Gobi Gurvan Saihan Mountain, Sevrey, Noyon Bogd, Nemegt and Gilbent. This province belongs to the Gobi region.
Umnugobi province is the melting pot of tourism in Mongolia and its climate is the hottest, too that is above +300 in summer. There are 2 airports operate in the province already and is expecting another international airport. It shows how crowded the area is.

It is the place where large numbers of dinosaur findings are found. The first dinosaur finding in Asia has been found in Umnugobi province. Also it is the place where live and “latest dinosaurs” can be seen very often. There are mountain sheep, wild goats, wild sheep, leopards, foxes and antelopes as well as various birds including lammergeyers, eagles, kites and falcons.

Sightseeing 
When you visit Umnugobi province, you have to see unusual places like Yolyn am, Hongoryn els, Bayanzag, Moltsog els, Muhar shiver, Nemegt and Hermen tsav. For your attention it is MNT 1000 for Mongols and MNT 3000 for foreigners to enter the national reserve the Gobi Gurvan Saihan.

Yolyn am (Lammergeyer’s pass). Yolyn am is the mountain pass of the Gobi Gurvan Saihan Mountain and is called so because there are many lammergeyers. We recommend you to relax in this beautiful place with fresh air, surrounded by unique rocks and springs and frozen in depth until late July. Great number of juniper can be found here as well. If you visit there early in the morning or late in the evening you could witness scarce animals and birds such as lammergeyer, mountain goats and sheep. In the summer, there are people who have horses, and if you get tired walking to the mountain pass you may ride a horse for MNT 1000. Remember, you have to pay MNT 3000 if you are accompanied by a foreigner. There is the Gobi Natural Museum displaying the Gobi nature, its flora and fauna near Yolyn am. Its ticket costs MNT 1000. Yolyn am lies in the northwest, 45km from Dalanzadgad.

Muhar Shiver. This place is very similar to Yolyn am and it has been taken into reservation. Therefore entering the area by car has been forbidden. Like Yolyn am, it has frozen in depth and a cool place, surrounded by rocks.

Bayanzag. This place, which has become world-known with the first dinosaur findings in Asia by the U.S. paleontologists in 1921, is called Bayanzag because it is rich in saxuals (Haloxylon ammodendron). Skeletons of protoceratops and tarbosaurus have been found here. It is said that the Government of Mongolia has changed the first found tarbosurus skeleton, which is now displayed at the U.S. natural History Museum, with two Fords at that time. Bayanzag is also a beautiful place with unusual formations. It is like someone has carried huge red mud cliffs on dry sands of the Gobi. It is interesting and yet beautiful to see red-hot mud cliffs when sunset lights shine upon them. Seeing this beauty, Americans who came first in 1921 called it “Flaming Cliffs” and therefore it has become world-known with this name. Since the place is crowded by tourists, steppe people sell memorial things here. Also there are people with camels to have others ride. Bayanzag is located 120km on the northwest of Dalanzadgad.

Hongoryn els. It is a sand dune with thin sand grains that last for 180km in length. Natives call it “Duut manhan” because it has a sound like flying plane when the wind is strong. This place lies 200km on the west from the province center. This huge sand dune, which reaches 80m at maximum, is said to come with the winds for many years. Interestingly it has the Hongor River and green grass nearby. When people and children run downwards, the sand moves and the famous sound come along. Natives say walking barefoot on sands is good for kidneys. If you want you can travel through sand dunes by camels.

Moltsog els. These sand dunes are smaller than those in Hongoryn els and its sand grain is not as thin as Hongoryn els. Tourists, who could not go to Hongoryn els from the province center, usually come here. Thick sexual woods are nearby which is also worth seeing.

Nemegt Mountain. One of the places with dinosaur findings, the Mountain is located 400km on the west from Dalanzadgad town. Its red mud cliffs are as beautiful as those in Bayanzag. Since places like Nemegt, Altan Uul, Tugrugiin shiree, Uhaa tolgod and Hermen tsav have large findings of dinosaurs, you may meet the international paleontologists working there.

Hermen tsav. It is difficult to reach this place, where there is no water, human inhabitance but dinosaur findings. It is said there are two entrances since the place is hollow. It is also called “Death crack” because one could be lost easily and it reaches +600. This place is not recommended so often because only skilled drivers could reach there.

However, if you could get there that would be a rare opportunity and a good journey. It is like those unusual red cliffs prove that the Gobi was once a sea many years ago. Once you see those avant-garde cliffs in shapes of mid-century European castles and various animals, you won’t forget. It has willows and bushes but 1m long lizard might come out of the willows.

Dalanzadgad town
Dalanzadgad is a relatively industrialized town with developed infrastructure. There is a power plant, publishing house, candle and felt factories as well as wool-washing plants. It has number of tourist camps since the province has developed tourism well. There are natives who earn their living by engaging in tourism business.

There are several hotels and motels including Tuvshin, Devshil and Gobi. Restaurants include Mazaalay and Gobi as well as those in hotels.

What to buy? 
When you get in Umnugobi, buy some dairy products such as camel dried curds and drinks made by thinning. If you can’t pick up any homuul by yourselves, you can buy salted and prickled homuul from native women to have with meals. Red and white goyo (bulbous plant found in the Gobi) is quite popular. It is used for sanguification, food and for making vodka. Hand crafts made of cashmere and camel wools can be found everywhere.

In Umnugobi you can watch Mongolian National Broadcast Television, UBS, MN25 and TV9 televisions via cable. There is Mongolian radio and local FM stations. You can have access to the Internet here and telephones and mobiles of Mongolian telecommunication, Skytel and Mobicom operate in Umnugobi province.
