Geographical location
Bayanhongor province is located in the south-western part of Mongolia, covering the southern plateau of Hangai Mountain ranges, south-eastern ranges of Altai Mountain and the Gobi beyond Altai and bordering with Uvurhangai, Umnugobi, Gobi-Altai, Zavhan, Arhangai provinces and with China by 140km. it has three regional land where steppe, forest and the Gobi are combined.

Its rivers such as Baidrag, Tui, Taatz and Zag take their sources from Hangai Mountain ranges. Moreover there are big lakes namely Orog, Buun tsagaan and Holboolj. During winter time its temperature is usually between 18 and 30 degrees whilst during summer time it is between 15 and 27 degrees. Its annual rainfall is an average of 216.3mm.     

Some features
o   Carcass of giant dinosaurs, which lived 50 to 80 million years ago, are found here.
o  Bayanhongor province is well-known for its hot and cold spas including Shargaljuut, Uheg, Urguot, Teel, Haliut, Icheet and Huren had.

Flora and fauna
In Altai and Hangai Mountains there are mountain sheep, wild sheep, mountain goats, leopards, lynxes, deer, hinds, wild boars and pigs, musk deer, badgers and roe bucks. Also, fur bearing animals such as marmots, foxes, wolves, steppe-foxes and wildcats can be found in great numbers. In the Gobi region, one may see preserved animals like black-tail antelopes, Ursus pruiosus, wild camels, Przhevalsky’s wild horses and reed boars. Scarce species of snakes and lizards that are registered in the Red Book could be found as well.      

There are over 150 kinds of birds such as eagles, lammergeyers, falcons, snow cocks, condors, swans, yellow ducks, geese and bustards. One could find scarce birds including spoonbills, storks, steppe geese, and more in large numbers too. Its rivers and lakes are homeland for various fish namely pikes, perches and so on.

One thirds of Mongolian flora grows in Bayanhongor province. There are many kinds of plants for herbs, fodders, nutrients, oils, papers, glues, dyes and those useful for soil strengthening and sand firming. Segmented plants such as feather grass, couch grass and brome grass in Hangai. Mainly nourishing and fresh grass like steppe wheat grass, plants with vitamins-wild onion, absinth and wild leek grow in the steppe.   

The Gobi region is rich in sweet plants including wild leek, feather grass, couch grass and broom grass, as well as marshy bushes and plants such as sagebrush, caragana and more. It has over 100 kinds of herbals including yellow lily, dandelion, gentian and bulbous plant.

Bayanhongor province is rich in various kinds of fruits such as barberries, currants, hippopae rhamnoides, black currants, strawberries and sweetbriers, flour and tea plants such as doe ears, peonies, marshes and viviparous snake-weeds. 

Sightseeing
Chess rock. The Chess rock monument, which is located in Erdenetsogt soum, is one of cultural heritages of the people who lived in 3000BC. This heritage comprises of deer stone, tomb with engraved square rock enclosures, engraved and chess-shaped ancient grave mound. The finding shows that Mongols used to play the chess since Huns period.

Truly faithful Nomun Khan’s Monastery. This monastery was founded in the 1750’s (Galuut soum). Until the 1930’s, “Gur’s song”, a song with combined praising and blessing, was sung here.

Huren belchir. Chandmani ovoo, which is located between the Zag and the Baidrag Rivers, has been worshipped since earlier times. It was recorded in the Secret History of Mongolia that Chinggis Khaan once camped here when declaring a war. Later on Galdanboshigt and His Highness Zanabazar assembled with Halha Kings in this place.

Dinosaur findings. In Nogoon tsav hooloi, Shinejinst and Bug tsav in Bayangobi soum, Bayanhongor province you will get Mongolian Gobi was once the basin for fresh water with no outward streams when you see fossils of giant dinosaurs of 3 to 4 meters in height and about 20 meters in length that lived 50 to 80 million years ago as well as remains of shells and mud Hermen tsav that resemble sea-bottom.

Spas. There are 20 hot and cold spas: Shargaljuut, Oheg, Urguut, Teel, Haliut, Icheet and Huren had. Among these spas, Shargaljuut contains various ingredients and is famous for its curing nature. Shargaljuut spa is located 60km from province center and 678km from Ulaanbaatar city. Hot spa of Shargaljuut is one of world famous 108 spas in terms of its unique formation and curing nature. This spa has more than 300 hot gushing forth of +450 to +960 that stream out of granite and crystal rocks. Since Shargaljuut spa agitates nerve blood vessels and affects on blood circulation and internal secretions, it is good for curing some gynecological skin diseases as well as serious inflammation of joints. According to research results, most springs of hot spa mainly include hydrocarbon, carbon, sodium sulfates.

Shopping-What to buy?
You can buy dairy products in Bayanhongor. Here you may find well known dried curds of Buutsagaan goats, treatment vodka “Goviin Shim” made of cranberries.

Negdelchin and Nomun hotels are popular here and there are restaurants called Bayanhongor, Seoul and Uran hairhan.
