Mongolian tale: “Why The Bats Lives in The Dark”

Mongolian tale: “Why The Bats Lives in The Dark”

Once, a long time ago, a terrible battle broke out between the Birds and the Beasts of this Earth. No one remembers any more what caused this battle to start, but the fighting was so furious that the whole earth shook and the land was covered with broken feathers, bloody hair, and the bodies of fallen creatures.
On one side of the battle swarmed the animals of the air. All the birds, great and small, were massed in the heavens, from the most powerful eagle, sharp-eyed hawk, and swift falcon to the tiniest finch and fragile sparrow. Opposing the birds were formidable adversaries: The kingly lion, menacing tiger, mighty stag, massive bear, and all the other beasts of the land. The only animal in the whole world that did not choose sides in this war was the Bat. As a mouse with wings or a birdy beast, the Bat gambled on its dual nature, waiting to see which side would win. In this way when the time came, it could claim victory with the conquering army. When it looked as though the birds of the air were gaining the advantage, the Bat would become like a bird, flap its wings and screech: “I’m a bird, too! I’ll peck at the beasts below, pierce their skins, and dig my sharp talons into their flesh! Readmore…

Photo Printing

Photo Printing

There are numerous photo printing facilities around Ulaanbaatar. The best are just behind the buildings on the east side of Sukhbaatar Square – the Kodak and Fuji film signs make it apparent where they are. Konika and Fuji centers are most popular ones. The prices are reasonable and cheap and you can take in your digital flash cards, USB sticks, CD’s etc and get whatever shots you want printed. It mostly takes 10 to 20 minutes to be ready. Larger reprints often come without a paper envelope to carry them in so make sure you bring some protective sleeve when picking up the photo. Smaller sizes come in small plastic bags. At these places you can also buy cameras, digital cards, film and frames. The photo counter on the first floor at The State Department Store( Ikh delguur) is way behind the times being unable to print from digital media. This hopefully will change quite soon. If you want passport photos done then there are two quick and reasonable places in opposite corners of the first floor of the State Department Store. You can get an array of different mug shots done here in 5 minutes and for around Tg5000.

Two Hump Camel

Two Hump Camel

Camels are divided into 5 types. Camels in Mongolia are of the two-humped Bactrian variety. They have traditionally been important for transport (they are used for moving gers) and status, but have been steadily reducing in numbers, perhaps because of the introduction of mechanized transport.
Bactrian camels also live in the wild in Mongolia, but are very close to extinction — the vast majority are now domesticated. It’s estimated that there are only 1,000 left in the wild, with the main threat to their lives from habitat loss. As more towns are built up in the Mongolian desert, less watering holes are available for the camels. They are also in competition with the domesticated herds. Camels are extremely well suited to living in the desert; in the summer their coat is short and thin and in the winter it grows thick, long and dark which protects them from the cold. They can close their nostrils to keep out sand in high winds. Readmore…

Ger - Traditional Mongolian accomodation

Ger - Traditional Mongolian accomodation

A round wooden-framed felt tent covered in durable while canvas seems to be the most simple description of this portable home, familiar to many from Russian word yurt. The modern shape of the Mongolian ger has been formed as the result of a long development from huts, marquees and wheeled abodes. The Mongolian ger has a 2500-3000 year history. Mongol nomads invented this type of dwelling the frame of which is chiefly made of willows and it’s covered with felt. This is a multipurpose dwelling which can be easily collapsed, transported to another place and put up again fully preserving its original shape. In medieval era large gers that belong to kings and nomadic chieftains were on special wheeled floors and were dragged by a number of oxen. The Mongolian ger has two key components, the wooden wall shell is called khana, the upper wooden poles (uni) usually measure 1.5-3 meters, the central supporting two columns are known as bagana and the uppermost smoke hole is toono. Religions of the Great Mongol Empire

Religions of the Great Mongol Empire

The most interesting period of the religious attitudes of the Mongols was the period when Genghis Khan founded the Great Mongol Empire. Genghis Khan and his successors idolized Shamanism and holy spirits. The shamans, who worshiped the Eternal Blue Sky, were never banned by other religious denominations.
Karakorum, the capital of Great Mongol Empire, was one of the great cultural, religious and political center of the world. Buddhists, Christians, Nestorians, Muslims and Confucians co-existed by setting up their own temples and monasteries. History tells us that the monasteries and temples had their own governing centers and head authorities. The Judaist doctrine allowed its citizens to follow Buddhist teachings. In Karakorum, along with shamanism, there was a Buddhist lamasery, two mosques, one Christian church and 12 temples of other religions. Beginning with the Great Khan, Genghis, the Mongolian Khans and nobles never discriminated against the religious denominations of conquered nations and let them co-exist on an equal footing. Khubilai Khan celebrated in his own country the festivities of various religions. Readmore…

Airag or Fermented Horse Milk

Airag or Fermented Horse Milk

Airag, fermented from Mongolian mares, is special because of its nutritious and medical values. Mare’s milk varies in its composition of vitamins (vitamins B1, B2, Br, Pt, C) protein, carbohydrate and fat due to the distinction of the composition and quality of the grass and plant of the areas. Airag is widely used to cure lung and respiratory diseases, tuberculosis, to activate the digestion, and to improve the overall strength of a person.

Airag is served to the guests at the beginning of a celebration or feast. The best part of airag is offered to the nature and sprinkled over head and hindquarters of winner horses in the race. Airag is fermented with the help of yeast. It is put in a wooden bucket with mare’s milk. Then it is put in the sun and ladled up thousands of times. The prepared yeast is poured into khukhuur /a leather bag/ with milk which is also ladled up more than 6000 times to have it fermented. Readmore…

Renting an apartment independently

Renting an apartment independently

If you want to stay in Ulaanbaatar and the company you work for won’t find you a place then it’s quite easy to rent an apartment yourself…providing you have made friends with a Mongolian speaker. If not then you can look on the notice boards of expat pubs and bars, hostels and in the two English language newspapers, The UB Post and Mongol Messenger which have listings every week. These are normally apartments that are built and furnished at the Westerner in mind – obviously at western prices.

As always, make sure that you check the contract and be aware of little intricacies like what time of year the heating is turned on/off and if there is a curfew. Expat apartments can range from $300-$800 a month . Also be aware that even though it may look nice on the surface, probe deeper and you might find a few problems.

To get a good cheap apartment, then turn to the classified papers such as Zar Medee (every Friday Tg400) and Shuurkhai Zar (every Thursday and Friday Tg400) which lists 1, 2, 3, 4 room apartment places and so on. Some notices specifically notes ‘renting to foreigner’. Readmore…
