The organizational structure and line of activities of the Ministry of Road, Transport and Tourism of Mongolia includes all modes of transportation such as road, railway, air and maritime transport which take major part in its ultimate goal to develop an infrastructure network that is able to sustain  economic growth of the country.

During the socialist regime the economic development of the country heavily relied on foreign loans, assistance and investments and after the fall  of regime in 1990’s the economy suffered great downfall in the domestic production and supply of industrial, agricultural and raw materials entailing decrease in volume of goods transported by road and railway. In 2000, the volume of goods transported by road and railway decreased by 4.8 times and the number of passengers declined by 2.5 times than compared to those in 1990. However, since 1998 the situation has been improving.
