Volunteering on Newspapers |
There are two English newspapers in Ulaanbaatar, The UB Post and the Mongol Messenger. Both accept volunteers and if you in Mongolia there long enough (if if you are lucky too) then you maybe asked to stay on as English Editor or maybe even Editor and recieve a small salary (from $100-$300 per month). Another, more secure option to land a placement is to go through an organisations who act as a middleman between you and the paper and also arrange accomodation - for a fee of course. One such organisation is Teaching and Projects Abroad who don't only cater for Mongolia but other countries all over the world. However, a word of advice - you'll be paying quite alot for something that could, with a little research and luck, cost you nothing. Working on a paper in Mongolia will certainly open your eyes to the 'unseen' parts of Mongolian life. Maybe they're not the kind of publications where you fine-tune your reporting skills or get a sample of the cutting-edge world of print journalism but for those who can use it to their advantage, it's a great thing to do whilst in Mongolia. |
