Mongolian officials have warned local authorities to prepare for strong dust storms within coming days.

The Meteorological Institute issued a warning Wednesday that dust storms, generating speeds of 16-20 meters per second, are expected in the country’s eastern provinces.

Government officials have asked local authorities to be particularly careful to not allow the winds to fuel forest and steppe fires.

There have been 75 such fires reported in Mongolia in 2008 with all of them having been extinguished.

However, officials report four fires are currently being fought in Dornod, Khovsgol, Bulgan and Gobi-Altai aimags.
