Geographical location

01165_bbUvs province (Ulaangom town) lies in Great Lakes Lowland, the western border of the nation, 1417km from the state capital Ulaanbaatar city. It borders with Russian Federation on the north side, Zavhan province on the east, Hovd province on the south and Bayan-Olgii province on the west. It covers an area of 69600 square kilometers and 60 percent of its overall area refers to Hangai (hilly area with pleasant climate, fertile soil, forests, rivers and lakes) and 40 percent to the Gobi region.
Population
Uvs province is the homeland for various ethnic groups including Durvod, Bayad, Halh, Hoton, Torgoud, Zahchin, Urianhay and Myangad. As of 2005, population of 80600 persons was registered in Uvs province.

Some features
o    Grand Champion H.Baianmunh, who won 11 times in Naadam Festival, well-known politicians such as Tsedenbal Yumjaa and Batmunh Jamba were born in this province.
o    Famous for its salty nature, Uvs Lake is located in this province. It is said that its salt is 5 times greater than that of seas.
o    90 percent of the world hippopae rhamnoides, of which 70 percent grow in Uvs province, grow in Mongolia.

Flora and fauna
Over 430 species of high-tube flora of 180 groups and 52 clans have been registered in Uvs province, however there are no studies on low-tube flora. Larches, birches, cedars, pines, aspens, willows, caragana stenophylla and caragana leucophloea disseminate all over the area. There are, too, herbs such as yellow lily, sweetbrier, nettle, plantain, herba-thermopsidis and fruits like hippopae rhamnoides, black currants, blueberries, strawberries and barberries.

Uvs province can be named as main resource for hippopae rhamnoides. Also it has rich salt and coal deposits. A salt deposit with 60 tons salt in Shuden Mountain, which lies 18 km from the center of Davst soum, could supply salt needs of not only Mongols but also Asia for several years.

Economy     
It imports food stuffs and other goods (such as candies, flour products, clothes, shoes, etc.) from China and Russia and exports beef, horse meat, Mongolian ger, fish and animal raw materials. It has great numbers of sheep and goat and runs plantation in the eastern part of the area, growing vegetables and other greens. Moreover, it has swine, chicken, duck and bee raising farms.

It has a historic tradition of growing greens since the King Galdan Boshigt. Pastures account for majority of the land. It plants vegetable in an area of 153.8 hectares, potatoes in 220.5 hectares, feed plants in 684.6 hectares and fruits in 52.7 hectares respectively.

Sightseeing 
There are 121 small and big lakes in Uvs province involving Uvs, Hyargas, Achit, Har-Us, Duruu, Baganuur, Nogoon Lake, Uureg Lake, Shaazgai Lake, Olon Lake and so on. In addition, it has 183 rivers such as Han Huhii, Harhiraa, Turgen, Torhilog, Jivert, Tes, Nariin, Sagil, Borshoo, Ireg, Shiver, Namir, etc. and about 493 spas. A total of 16 mineral spas were registered in the province. Water area covers over 10 percent of overall land in Uvs province.

Uvs Lake lies in the northern part of the Great Lakes basin and in the north-eastern side of Uvs province, covering 3350 square kilometers. 84 km in length and 79km in width, this Lake is the biggest one in Mongolia. Uvs Lake is uninterrupted that has no streams outwards and contains 5 times greater salts than that of seas. 38 small and big rivers, including Tes, Nariin, Harhiraa, Turgen, Sagil. Borshoo, Hundlon and Torhilog join Uvs Lake. On sides of the Lake, there are salts and salt marshes as well as plants such as reeds, feather grass, bushes, shrubs, sedges, willows and aspens. Aquatic birds of 362 groups including swans, snow herons, spoonbills, steppe-hazel-grouses, ducks and yellow hazel geese and 72 kinds of mammals inhabit in the Lake.

Han Huhii Mountain ranges spread through the Great Lakes Lowland, separating lowlands of Uvs and Hyargas lakes. Hyargas Lake has tender sands in its northern side and rocky island in the southern side. Numerous kinds of fish such as Altai’s fish, yellow fish, etc. inhabit in this lake.

Shopping in Uvs-What to buy?

Once you arrive in Uvs province you will be embraced by hippopae rhamnoides. In summer it has abundant black currants and currants, also the dried curds are soft and sweet. Thus, you can do shopping here for some dairy products and fruits.

Communications
There are branches of Mongol Bank, KHAN Bank, Savings Bank, Mongol Post Bank, Zoos Bank and XAC Bank in Uvs province. You can have access to high-speed Internet café in the central square. Mobiles and phones of Mongolian telecommunications, Skytel and Mobicom can be used here as well.

Canada will open a permanent trade office in Mongolia to assist local Canadian businesses. Canadian firms have a reported $395 million in investments, including operating more than 20 mines. Canada is also Mongolia’s second largest investor.
