bayar2THE new Prime Minister of Mongolia, S.Bayar, who was appointed by the Parliament last Thursday with a 97.1 percent of the vote, started his job on Friday. He began by changing heads of the law enforcement agencies of the government. He removed chief of the General Intelligence Agency, T.Bilegt, last week as his first step in forming his team. R.Bold, a former Mongolian ambassador to Washington D.C, was called off last week to replace the head of the intelligence agency. The General Police Department and anti-corruption agency may see new chiefs soon.

Consultation on the appointment of the new ministers may begin by the end of this week between Prime Minister Bayar and President N.Enkhbayar. According to media analysis, some troubled acting ministers of the current government may not be part of the new cabinet, and also not more than one third of the new cabinet ministers would be formed from the members of the State Great Hural.

Last week, the steering council of the ruling Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party advised S.Bayar to form his cabinet within the week, and not to make any changes in the number of ministries. Last Friday, a working group setup by the MPRP met with leaders of the parliament-seated political parties to start negotiations to form a coalition government.
