We reported earlier that the Mongolian team is competing in the last Olympic qualifying boxing tournament held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. By the end of the tournament 3 Mongolian boxers P.Serdamba in the 48kg section, Z.Enkhzorig in the 57kg section and U.Monkh-Erdene in the 64kg section qualified for the Olympic Games which begin August 8. So altogether there will be four Mongolian boxers in the Olympic ring in Beijing.

E.Badar-Uugan who won the silver medal at the world championship last year in Chicago has already qualified. According to the trainers, Badar-Uugan also trained with his teammates and foreign boxers to become familiar with his opponents. The specialists and boxing fans were thrilled to hear that several boxers qualified for the Olympics and will be competing for the gold this summer.

In past Olympic games, Mongolia has only sent one boxer. U.Monkh- Erdene was the only one to compete in the Olympic ring during the 2004 Athens Olympics. Trainers are very happy that their athletes did well in the last Olympic qualifying tournament.
B.Tuvshinbat and Kh.Mandakhbayar advanced to the silver medal match, but were then defeated. The bronze medals were not enough to compete at the Olympic Games, but they seemed happy about what they achieved during the tournament.

In the 48kg light flyweight tournament P.Serdamba beat an Iranian and a Kyrgyz boxer in order to qualify. On the other hand, Z.Enkhzorig’s toughest battle for Olympic qualifications was against a North Korean boxer in the silver medal match. U.Monkh-Erdene had to fight one more battle than the two boxers mentioned above. In his weight section only the gold medalist was granted to take part at the big games. He fought against Akmatali Mamadinov of Kyrgyzstan in the gold medal match. Monkh- Erdene clearly dominated the match and won against his opponent 22:8. His experience also helped him in this match.

As for Serdamba and Enkhzorig, it was reported that they did not appear in the ring for the gold medal match, giving the gold medal automatically to their opponents. Specialists noted that this was done intentionally. The act of not appearing on the ring for the gold medal match was that the trainers did not want to reveal the fighting techniques to their strongest opponents. Anyway it is certain that qualifying for the Olympic Games was the main goal for the Mongolian athletes. According to the trainers the boxers who were not able to qualify for the Olympics also did their best.  Altogether the Mongolian boxers won 1 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
