Swimming pools in Ulaanbaatar

Swimming pools in Ulaanbaatar

Swimming pool in UlaanbaatarThere are three swimming pools in UB, the best of them is situated on the opposite side of the river in front of the Sky supermarket and the Chinggis Hotel. It can be easily distinguished by the blue glass dome on the roof of the building. The pool costs around 4,000 tugrug per session and is a popular place to hangout at weekends. Health and fitness is becoming increasingly popular with young people in Mongolia and the pool can get quite busy at the weekend with children and teenagers going wild all over the place

Some tips for seeking Medical Care

Some tips for seeking Medical Care

Medical careThe level of Mongolian medical services provided in Mongolia is NOT up to western standards. Unlike many other foreign capitals, there is no clinic that caters to foreigners or that provides a western standard of care. Access to any medical care is difficult at best. In the countryside, outside of the Ulaanbaatar, medical care is VERY DIFFICULT.  Hospitals are very short of most medical supplies including basic care items, drugs, and spare parts for medical equipments. If you must seek care in Ulaanbaatar several things you should keep in mind when dealing with local care providers.

Winter Clothing

Winter Clothing

How does one dress for -30C (-22F) weather? Very warmly and layered is the answer. Thankfully, you can purchase all warm clothes you need in Mongolia. There are people who laugh at the face of the one, who is trying to look ‘down with the locals’ by wearing traditional Mongolian clothes as everyday wear.

If you decide to go down this route then you’ll need a ‘deel’ which is a long warm unisex coat. You can pick it up from the black market for a very reasonable price which is around $50, maybe even cheaper and they’re well made. Or you can get one made just for you by the saloons offering such service. Choose one with a discreet design so that you will be able to wear it without being laughed at when (or if) you return to your own country.

The bubonic plague, which is obviously serious if you catch it, is almost unheard of, no cases of Malaria or yellow fever have been reported this year and rabies which is potentially the only decease you may catch is only known in the deepest darkest depths of the countryside.

Health and Fitness

Health and Fitness

Having said that there are a number of gymnasiums and athletic associations sprouting up in and around the city. Like almost anything else in UB availability effects the quality of the Gymnasiums, so the good ones tend to be a little expensive as far as membership is concerned and are mostly used as hangouts for all the corporate goons!

Skiing and Snowboard

Skiing and Snowboard

Winter in UB is more cold than freezing and the snow doesn’t settle too well, what snow the country does get is pretty thin and loose, usually less than a foot of snow, so the skiing opportunities are pretty poor.

Veterinary

There are three Veterinary offices in UB. The best one is situated next to the Circus, most of the staff here are foreign and well equipped. The fees are fairly reasonable costing around 20,000 Tugrug for basic treatment. I have heard about the animals being treated a little ruff, post surgery, by the Mongolian staff.
