Once, a long time ago, a terrible battle broke out between the Birds and the Beasts of this Earth. Long song or Urtiin duu of Mongolia

Long song or Urtiin duu of Mongolia

Urtiin duu, or ‘long song’ is known as a unique traditional singing style. It’s one of the oldest genres of Mongolian musical art, dating back to the 13th century. Urtiin duu involves extraordinarily complicated, drawn-out vocal sounds. It is evocative of vast, wide spaces and it demands great skill and talent from the singers in their breathing abilities and guttural singing techniques.

The Urtiin duu is a lyrical chant, which is characterized by an abundance of ornamentation, falsetto, an extremely wide vocal range and a free compositional form. The rising melody is slow and steady while the falling melody is often intercepted with a lively rhythm. Performances and compositions of Urtiin duu are closely linked to the pastoral way of life of the Mongolian nomads on their ancestral grasslands.

The main feature of the long song is the prolonged, tenuto notes with deeply modulated vibrato on the vowels. These majestic vibrating notes called shuranhai give the song profound philosophical, meditational character and they often depict the spacious mountain valleys and the tranquility of the Mongolian soul. Mongolian Script

Mongolian Script
Mongolian ScriptOne of the main reforms of Genghis Khan was the creation of Mongol Script. This script was based on the Uigur script and was made the official script of the State. In 1204, after defeating Naiman aimag and capturing its minister and scholar Tatatunga, Genghis asked him to teach his sons to write Mongol words in Uigur script.

This was the beginning of the Mongol script. The Uigur script’s similarity with Mongol dialect helped influence on the creation of an original script for classical Mongol language. With the development of the script, Mongolians could take much better records and managed their affairs more easily. The development of Mongol script was one of the biggest changes that occurred in the cultural life of Mongols.

Time and Business Hours

Time and Business Hours
Like the Chinese, the Mongolians use a lunar calendar to celebrate traditional holidays, such as the lunar new year. Years are traditionally grouped into five blocks of 12 years. Each block is named after one of the elements (Earth, fire, water etc) and each year is named after the 12 animals of the zodiac.

Nomads divide winter into periods of time in multiples of nine, the lucky number for Buddhists. The winter is 81 days long (nine times nine). At the end of the 81st day, Tsagaan Sar (White Month), is widely celebrated as the start of the lunar new year.

Government offices are usually open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays and lunch hour is 1 pm to 2 pm. Banks are supposed to open from 10 am to 3 pm weekdays. Mongolia introduced a five-day working week in 1998. Most private and state-run businesses open at about 10 am and close sometime between 5 and 8 pm. In the countryside most guanz: (canteens) seem to close for dinner (and often lunch as well). In reality, opening hours are often at the whim of staff. Readmore…
